In the Fall of 2023 the Rotary Club of Cataraqui-Kingston awarded a Community Service Grant of $2,000 to the Kingston Chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology.
The Queen’s students leading the project are in Biology, Geology, and Biology and Chemistry Education. The society, which includes community members, focusses on education through school workshops and summer camps, research to show the positive effects of conservation biology in Kingston, and conservation to promote native biodiversity and sustainability. The Native Pollinator garden now has for large plots with over 60 native plant species. Initial planting in the new Edible Plant Native Garden includes:
- Teas and Herbs: Mountain Mint, Fireweed, Pearly Everlasting, Anise Hyssop, Wild Bergamot, and Blue-eyed Grass
- Leafy Greens and Roots: Cut-leaf Coneflower, Milkweed, Golden Alexander, Evening Primrose, and Chives
- Fruits: Back Chokeberry, Low-bush Blueberry, and Woodland Strawberry
