The Rotary Four Way Test

Is it the truth?  Is it fair to all concerned?  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?  Will it be beneficial to all concerned

Rotary Reflection

For food in a world where many walk in hunger
For peace in a world where many walk in fear
For friends in a world where many walk alone
And for the opportunity to serve others through Rotary,
May we be truly thankful!

Fun Master - Robert Reid

Robert Reid raised money by testing everyone’s knowledge of the new bridge being constructed over the Cataraqui River.  Did you kn ow that the temporary road over the river is 800 meters long. And that there are five ecopasses created so that wildlife can still go up and down the river?  The actual bridge will be 1.2 km long.  There will be three lanes because one is for pedestrians.  The actual cost may be around $200 million.

Happy/Sad Bucks

John Gale enjoyed the first family gathering they have been able to have.  Rick Frasso paid to have the opportunity to say “Hi” to Terry Hicks.  Michelle echoed that, and thanked Bill Egnatoff for the great summary of our thoughts about local community projects.  Rick Fiedorec announced that our former member Jay Abramsky now has a baby granddaughter.  John Farrow was happy that Katie Burke was here as our speaker, and announced that our speaker next week will be Marioly Shanchez, our exchange student from 2005-06.  She now works in in Argentina.  We are expecting several other recent exchange students to come to that meeting.  Murray is happy that his friend Aruna Koushik from Windsor will be our speaker on September 1st.  She is a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor Roseland and an Assistant Governor of District 6400.  She is passionate about eradicating Polio. Along with her husband Shiva Koushik, Past President of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, they have undertaken eight National immunization trips.  Sean Goodall is happy that Jennifer Jones is the first woman to be named Rotary International President Nominee.

Covid 19 Food Project:  With the plan to give backpacks to children in families receiving food baskets at this time, 600 have been collected and there is a need for 900 more.  Several suppliers have been reached out to, and Rotarians may donate money.  Each will be stuffed with about $20 worth of learning supplies.  Let Ana know if you can donate to this project.  All four Kingston clubs as well as Gananoque and Napanee are involved.  Ana will let everyone know the price of a backpack.

Go Nuts Campaign:  There will be 2,500 Engineering frosh this year and Go Nuts will take an entirely different approach.  Queen's Engineering Frosh will be asked to participate in the GO NUTS (Rube Goldberg) MACHINE CHALLENGE.  There will be a selection of 10 best MACHINES. Once selection is complete, Queen's will post top 10 on the GO Nuts website. Queen's will promote to the Alumni, other Universities and student body. Rotarians will  share that website throughout our Facebook, Bulletin and Rotary in Kingston.cool website, word of mouth, etc. to promote it.  Voting for the best machine will be promoted. It will be $2.00 per vote. Vote as many times as you wish. The MACHINE with most votes wins the prize.

Centennial Committee:  It has been decided that $15,000 will be committed to the Loughborough School greenhouse and teaching kitchen project.  The school board now has a plan, and the project may become a model for future projects.

Communications Committee:  We are close to being able to turn on the website, with an aim to having it ready by September 12th

SNC – Supporting Newcomers to Canada:  This is a Centenary project. Initially it was to provide mentorship to New Arrivals to Canada . Our Club hosted 2 Pot Luck social events. They were very well attended. It was fun and the food was all very good and interesting.  It has developed into Workshops to Focus in on what the Newcomers needed; Conversations with Professions in various areas of expertise,
1. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields of study.
2. Educators
3. Non Profit and Social Service
4. Entrepreneurship
Please let me know if one or all the workshops are of interest and you wish to attend and participate in sharing your expertise with Newcomers to Canada.

Shashaba Project:  Two weeks ago she presented the Sechaba Project of RC Morningside, Johannesburg, South Africa , to the club.  The Sechaba ( meaning community) is a feeding project at an Early Care Program school in the informal settlement of Diepsloot of Johannesburg. The International committee decided to donate USD 1,500 to the project and last week John and Rick went to the bank to wire the money. It was received so to say the same day by RC Morningside and with the rate of exchange produced an amount of ZAR ( South African Rand) 25,800. This will go a long way to feed the little children, their families and teachers as a hot meal costs only ZAR 2.25. unemployment is at 50% in Diepsloot under normal circumstances and is aggravated by Covid. RC Morningside sent an email thanking Cataraqui Kingston for their generous donation and they will keep us updated  about the project. Our club can be truly proud of its humanitarian help in this time of Covid.
The link to the short video shown about the project can be found below;

Speaker Aug 18th - PDG Katie Burke - Global Grant Scholarships and Peace Fellowships

Michelle Chatten-Fiedorec introduced PDG Katie Burke, who was our District Governor in 2010-11.  She has a long history of involvement in education.

During this presentation, we learned about the types of funded studies that are available through Rotary.
For a Global Grant Scholarship, the applicant must live in our District 7040, but already be accepted for the first year of study at a Masters level outside of their home country.  Their study must be within one of Rotary’s seven areas of focus, and they must be endorsed by a 7040 Rotary Club. Note that there are now seven areas of focus, as “Supporting the Environment” has been added to the former six.

There are two types of Peace Fellowships.  One is for a two-year Masters level program at one of seven universities around the world.  The other is for a three-month certificate program at one of two universities, following at least five years of work experience. Rotarians and their lineal descendants may not apply.
Katie talked about the type of person who would make a good candidate, and the list was of pretty amazing credentials.  For details about the application process, you may visit https://my.rotary.org/en/peace-fellowship-application
Our District can recommend a candidate, but the final decision comes from the Rotary Foundation.
Natalie Kauf is a past recipient.  She was nominated by our Rotary Club, and has attended as a speaker.  This year, Audrey Wagner will be going to Oxford University and will be studying aspects of food security.
Some may remember Ambassadorial Scholarships- they no longer exist.  Their place was taken by the Global Grant Scholarships.

Speaker thanks were offered by Sean Goodall.
